Siem Reap Outreach July 2014

The whole weekend was kindly and fantastically organised by Sis. Loy: translator, social secretary, seminar organiser, moto transporter, all round cheerful sister and GPC committee for Siem Reap province, who invited the friends, kept the books and continually encouraged all of us. 
We stayed in a great hotel in Siem Reap that was to be the location of the Saturday afternoon seminar. The weekend started on a high note as many more interested friends flowed into the hotel room than was expected and the snacks and drinks were going fast! It was incredible as more and more interested people and Bros and Sis filed in packing people onto the floor on cushions, onto the bed, all after we had used the chairs from the hotel lobby! It was so exciting for a place without a BEC and a smaller opportunity to learn the Bible! Andy Pitcher did a great seminar on “Who are the Christadelphians” fantastically translated by the always enthusiastic Bro Vesna!

After the seminar most attendees went out to a restaurant for tea after squeezing onto various moto’s and tuk tuk’s. We had a table of about 25 people and we as Australians could barely speak 2 words to the interested friends sitting across from us- but the amazing thing was that by the end of tea- we had been taught a bunch of Khmer words and were having a conversation with the people sitting across from us! We got to know wonderful people who with a huge language barrier and the reason is most likely from our common thread of Bible interest!

Sunday was our favourite experience as it involved our first visit to a Province- places that most people we had talked to grew up in- so different to the city we have known! Alana and I got up earlier and went with Sis. Loy and her brother Sin to Bro. Visna and his wife Lynn’s house  to teach Sunday School. The weekend just got better as we had expected 5-6 S.S children, and ended up teaching 20 all from the local province! After giving them a small breakfast (which we ended up running out of because there was so many beautiful children) we started teaching them the story of David and Goliath with Loy as our translator. As an activity- we pieced together and drew a life sized Goliath which the kids had a ball colouring and painting in! There was universal delight as the children realised they could then throw ‘stones’ made out of plasticine at Goliath’s head followed by each student taking home a texta and colouring sheet.

A meeting was then held in the room generously lent out by Bro. Visna and his beautiful wife and daughter with the comment that “God has given me all of this (a 2 roomed wooden house) to share with others”- an incredible attitude that really hit home for us! It was amazing to share in fellowship with these Brethren and Sisters that we had never met and could hardly get to know due to a language barrier and yet, the time spent there was incredible as we struggled to grasp the way they live but rejoiced with them longing for the coming Kingdom!

It was sad to go from Siem Reap (apart from it being a very interesting tourist experience) but we felt very thankful that we were able to have that opportunity to meet those in and around Siem Reap and see how beneficial potentially future BEC work there could be!

Lovely to get that update. Is exciting to see that there is still a lot of excitement and opportunity for the gospel in Cambodia.

Well, dear Readers, Things have been busy here with preparation for our seminar this weekend. Catering, printing, emailing and phoning have been occupying our hours. James is sitting opposite me on the table working on his talks for Friday. We have had quite a number of bookings for our seminar and the numbers have only been limited by the size of our premises. God willing, all will attend and we’ll have a good two days of talks and chatting. We’re planning, God willing, a boat cruise as our social activity and that should be a blast since we can have a 2 hour cruise for 50 people for only $20. Have managed to hook up skype credit and tested a mobile call to Prydie. The 5 second lag meant it was like having two random monologues in the same room. The prices was fairly reasonable, but even as 3 cents a minute the cost climbs. James spends much time out on the balcony. He gets good wireless reception. God Proves the Power of Prayer Again and Again

Over the course of my five-month long Cambodia trip I had the opportunity to teach class es at the Bethezer girl dorm regularly . For th ese class es I have a translator so I just get to teach the good news ( none of this dilly-dallying about English teaching ). Our topic on this particular night was prayer. Philippians 4:6 reminded us that God is longing to hear from us just as a father lo ves to hear from his child or how we are just hanging out to get a message from someone we love. We looked at H is promises to answer ALL our prayers while we abide in Jesus Christ (John 15:7) and at Psalm 34:4 where God confidently affirms that when you find your happiness with God, H e will certainly give you more of what makes you happy (Him!). And you can pray for that happiness because God will give you anything that brings you closer to Him so never be afraid to ask! That is nothing but i ncredibly good news !
