BEC has been blessed by the arrival of our sister Sarah Vogel from New Zealand. Sarah has spent the last seven months in India and will be in Cambodia for the next two months. Loy and Gaye are so happy to have a young sister for companionship! Sarah joined us last night for her first visit to the Bethezer dorms where she was welcomed with many smiles and questions. We began our second course of Learn to Read the Bible Effectively for all the new dormers. At the same time we have started a session on discipleship for baptised brothers and sisters and those who completed the Learn to Read the Bible Effectively course last time. Again, we had about forty participants and we all joined together after our study for refreshments and a movie.
Today we will witness another baptism in Cambodia. So Veasna arrived from the province last night very excited about his baptism which will take place in the Mekong River this morning at 10.00. This young man began as a translator with BEC last year when we ran seminars in Phnom Penh. He learnt the truth about the Bible through these sessions and also through study of God's word at BEC. His work took him to the provinces and so over the last nine months he has been continuing his study with correspondance lessons and by visiting the BEC once a month. So Veasa always entertains us with his infectious laughter and humorous tales. He was unable to be baptised during his last visit to Phnom Penh because he accepted employment with an organisation and had to return early. Last night he informed us that he chose to leave this job because he could not agree with their principles. So Veasna had us in "stitches" - laughing as he recounted his experience. Apparently at this organisation, which is run by an American church, all the employees have to attend a worship service at the start of each day for half an hour. Everyone is expected to pray and speak in 'tongues' during this time and So Veasna laughed as he told us how the boss would walk around checking
to make sure everyone was participating! He realised this was not a good place to work...but concluded by demonstrating the babbling, wailing noise that would fill the room each morning with hands waving. Sad, of course, that people would carry on with this nonsense, but So Veasna's recount was so animated that we could not help laughing with him. We pray that God will be with So Veasna as he begins his life in Christ today and his journey to the Kingdom.
