Ecclesial Bible Weekend

Fun. Water. Readings. Prayer. Bible Studies. Chatting. Late nights. Not much sleep. Delicious Food. Fellowship. Praise. Worship. Beach. Waterfall. Sharing. Learning. Laughing. If only my conscience would allow me to finish by blog here. But I guess you'll want a little more detail about the Phnom Penh Ecclesia's Study Weekend at Sihanoukville. Being on a tight budget but still wanting to spend the weekend together in a beautiful location the Phnom Penh Ecclesia decided to hold the study weekend at Sihanoukville and stay at the BEC. Sis Sokhun was lovely enough to insist on cooking (with the help of some volunteers from the Bethezer Dorms). So while us foreigners (John T, Michael & Miriam & kids, Jonathan & myself) and Him & Theavy slept in comparitive luxury at a 'nearby' guest house, the rest of the ecclesia squished into the BEC. I'm not really sure how they managed to fit 40 people into such a small area... I think some of the guys slept...

Outreach Weekend

Abraham the man of Faith was our theme for the May Outreach Weekend. We looked at events in his life, the promises he received and how we can participate in those promises. We had about 12 attendees for the full weekend which included 6 studies (plus the seminar at the dorms and the memorial meeting). Quite a full-on weekend! And yet the students were attentive and interested throughout!! I know I've been here for a few months now but I am still impressed by the enthusiam of our students and their thirst to learn. Hmmm.... I appear to have writers block so I think it may be best for me to share the highlights in point form. ·          I was priveleged to teach the section on what the promises mean for us. I started by getting the students to brainstorm what they had learnt so far about what exactly was promised. They recalled every aspect!!! And then went on to work out a lot of the partial application without assistance. · ...

Experiences form Sihnoukville

After close to seven weeks in Cambodia it is almost time to go home. Sam and I arrived in Phnom Penh towards the end of March and after a few days in the capital we headed south to Sihanoukville where we were to spend a majority of our time (Sihanoukville is a coastal city in south western Cambodia). One of the beaches in Sihanoukville On the very first weekend we were able to witness the baptism of our sister Srey Pov. It was a special day down at the beach and included a shared bbq lunch and memorial meeting. Srey Pov’s baptim   As the BEC in Sihanoukville is relatively new we worked hard to attract students by handing out flyers advertising the English course we were planning to teach. Word of mouth helped to gain students as many would bring along their friends to study with them. In early April Simon and Anna arrived in Sihanoukvile to lend a hand at the BEC. It was great to have them along and we appreciated both their help and ...

Trip to the Provinces

Well, I have to say I am thoroughly tired of sitting on buses!  But am also very thankful for the fact that Cambodia has such consistent (and well-air conditioned) transport to every province. Jonathan and I were privileged to be invited to the province wedding of Bro Vanny & Sis Chantry.  As this wedding was to be held in Preah Vihear province (right up the top of Cambodia) we thought it would be a good opportunity to visit our brothers and sisters in isolation.  Our itinerary looked something like this (in retrospect, since plans changed to accommodate for needs): ·          Wednesday:  Visited Bro Savvy (had a memorial meeting with him), his fiancee, and Sis Vichhem in Kampong Thom           Thursday:  Attended Bro Vanny & Sis Chantry's wedding in Preah Vihear           Friday:  Memorial meeting with Bro Sophorn, Bro Sorphea and Sis Vichera in Pre...

The Zoo & Mountain

At 6:20am early morning, brother Tut Tuk Tuk driver picked us up and took us to the dorms, with a short pit stop at ABC bakery because us westerners are fat (the donuts were finished by the time we got to the dorms). So the bus trip began, about 10 minutes into the trip the large group of Khmer boys at the back of the bus started singing, they would sing for a minute then burst into laughter and then do it all again, it was good to see there fun loving spirit come right out. After about 1.5 hours we arrived at the first destination, it was a big mountain with an old temple on the top. Naturally, the boy challenged me to a race and if you know me you will know I love a challenge, so it was on. a few of them started sprinting up but soon ran out of steam, with determination I pushed my way to the front and 833 stairs later I reached the top first by a long way. Jonny forgot his age and also tried but I am told he had to stop with some miner hart problems, good try though Jonny. ...

A Month at Sihanoukville BEC, Cambodia

We arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia early March, and were welcomed by bre. and sis. there at the BEC. A rigorous initiation into the running of the Cambodian BECs began, and lasted a few days, ice cream and football included. We then took the bus to Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville is a beach town some 5 hours south-west of Phnom Penh. It is fairly ‘touristy’. The BEC there is located under/next to a university, and we were required to help out there after K and Sarah had left. It is a light and airy space, which serves the purpose of teaching well and makes it pleasant to live there. Sam and Naomi (Aus) were in charge when we arrived, and had started handing out leaflets  attracting some new students, starting to fill an otherwise rather empty timetable. Simon, Anna, Sam and Naomi Once the students began coming, many of them invited their friends to come with them. This was great, but meant we had to have a flexible attitude to class sizes as there was often one more than we expe...

We decided to go after the 30 th of January, as I had to renew my visa. By the time we arrived at the BEC , We mainly wanted Just a feed, Shower and bed.     Day 1 to 7 went with a relaxed routine coming about and continuing . We all would be up and about early for the day as Sokun would start the day by teaching Srey pov and cooking breakfast, and not too long after breakfast Sokun and Srey pov would be off to the market for the day’s Supplies(Sokun Di...
