Abricot Jam (not a spelling mistake),
invasion of the Chann Dynasty, and a slithery visitor. Just a few of the random
things that have happened here.
We have been investigating the options for
breakfast and have developed a menu based upon whole grain Weet-Bix, fruity
muesli, long life milk from NZ, a German bakery and sausage maker, eggs,
tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, peanut butter, butter, vegemite and abricot jam.
With a nice mug of coffee we start the day at the crack of dawn, with our minds
racing and heads spinning. The toaster and kettle have survived a molten power
board and blackouts.
Our Sister, cook, cleaner, apprentice
carpenter and marketeer, Srey Pov arrived back from four days in Phnom Pehn and
had with her an endless line-up of Channs.
Brother K (Chann Kosal) and Chann Srey Pov grew up down here in
Sihanoukville Province. The Chann clan started at about ankle height and at
increments of 5 centimetres paraded past the office. With gem like eyes and
faces that sparkled, each nipped by saying their rehearsed “joom reap soo-er”
(hello) to the two new foreigners at BEC2. We counted ten but maybe there were
only eight. Whatever the correct number they were only seen together at
breakfast woofing down toast and the rest of our peanut butter supply. The next
ten hours were like motos in Phnom Pehn but this time it was random minicules
darting between furniture, disappearing and appearing through doorways, no
doubt disturbing our resident geckos, while the stockpile of ice cubes in the
fridge dwindled to a few tiny shards. Wow! And we thought our precious little
Charlie and Cruz took a bit of management. Did I mention that this clutch of
Chans came from one mother, K and Pov’s older sister? Whew, makes me think
about the German sausage maker.
A few days ago Dy called to us to see the
small snake he had dispatched in the outside area at the front of the
BEC2. Lynne took the photo next to a
size 6 thong, jangle, slip slop, while I tried unsuccessfully to identify it in
Google. The best guess is a non-venomous
Malaysian whip snake.
We ended August with a medium to good
start, building on Albert’s work and finding a few new starters. We are really
enjoying the climate and venue and Srey Pov and Dy are great company. The days
are long and challenging but we are really enjoying the company of the four
young brethren in the ecclesia here. Dy blew us away with his wonderful
exhortation last Sunday and brother Savy gives us anecdotes and summations with
deep spiritual insight that seems to come seamlessly from his life in Christ.
Our ecclesial outing on Sunday was
unbelievable. It’s great to feel alive and youthful, throwing frisbees,
swimming in the sea and just having fun together. We followed the sun down to
its crimson burial, drinking icy cokes
and eating wraps with the freshest possible seafood-salad inside. We were in
bed by 8 o’clock and woke ready to fire up when the first bird chirped, making
its announcement of satisfaction with our Almighty provider and sustainer and
all that he gives us.
