It
is wonderful to arrive after a rain in tropical countries, to be met by Sister
Nirath and Bro Aaron Smith at the airport is even more so. It is good to see
familiar faces in a foreign country.
The
ride in a Tuk Tuk to the BEC was fun. Treacherous…. But fun. Really depends on how you look at things,
like crossing the road with thousands, well, hundreds of bicycles, motorcycles
and Tuk Tuks flashing by, like watching a motorcyclist motoring past you when
it is evident that the lights have turned red and your side of traffic light
has already turned green, like going over holes the size of boulders and nearly
overturned, hmm….
Arriving
in the evening is good as you get to see everyone starting to come into the BEC
or come back to the BEC and was quickly swamped with hugs and warm welcomes
only a family provides. Within the hour of arriving, I was assisting Bro Aaron
with 3 students on the subject of resurrection. Eager to learn and asked many
questions, they were eager to return the next day they said.
Bro
Vitou then kindly arranged for the sessions that i was to teach. There will be 2 morning sessions at the LCDI
and 2 evening sessions after dinner at the Dorm. There were about 40 students at the LCDI of
between 13- 26 years of age and the session was soon in full swing. Teaching
the World Health Organization hand hygiene recommendations were met with
laughter and fun where important concepts of general hygiene was reiterated a
few times. The topics covered on the first day were; first aid for burns,
wounds and lacerations, sprains, fractures; what to do when you have nausea or
vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever; how to maintain good hair and teeth;
what is a healthy diet; how to prevent transmission of coughs and colds.

LCDI Students
There
were many queries which I found really refreshing as there is a thirst for
knowledge and eagerness to improve. As expected, the boys were bored senseless
after the end of a 2 hour session when the girls started asking more questions
on health and beauty. This session was more or less repeated at the dorm where
there were about 20 boys and 17 girls, most of whom are teenagers and young
adults. Sis Loy has kindly translated
for me and joined in the hand hygiene fun as well.
The
next day was a repeat of the day before with more topics covered. This time the
students were keen to learn more and had asked more questions. Topics covered
were how you would recognize a heart attack and what to do in that event; how
do you assist a person who is choking; more on health and nutrition, anaemia,
hypertension, hypotension as well as CPR and how to maintain airway. However, I
did not teach LCDI the techniques of CPR as we ran out of time.
Dormitory Students
We,
Sister Nirath, Bro Aaron and I left for BEC 2, Sihanoukville the next day. We
were warmly met by and had a lovely
dinner at the beach. Sister Theung taught Sunday school while I helped with the
younger kids on Sunday morning and in the afternoon, we had a Memorial meeting
with Bro Lee exhorting and Bro Savvy, translating, where we were encouraged by Christ’s
teachings from Luke 14. We are blessed to be a part of their fellowship with
God, albeit short.

love for God. I will certainly be back again.
