Pig's Ears

Chum reap sua puekmaak [translation: greetings friends]!! It’s currently monsoon season here but only now do us newbies really believe it. Last night provided a spectacular display of the awesome power of nature. Some of the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard was crackling through the night as rain bucketed down in torrents temporarily turning our street into an ankle deep river. Those unfortunate enough to be caught in the downpour (momentary sympathy for Michael, David and Dan M) returned completely drenched and bringing stories of knee high flooding in a few places.

This morning team intrepid, comprising of Dan and Kez, Dan M and Vitou, hit the ever so slightly soggy streets (humidity reigns supreme once more) to head out to Preah Vihear Province. Over the next few days they will be meeting up with two long term contacts to continue discussions on the Bible. The contacts have invited some of their friends along for the discussions. Please pray for them as they share the Good News of The Gospel. The team will then visit several brothers and sisters who currently live in isolation in that province.

Those of us who have remained in Phnom Penh will tomorrow have the privilege of witnessing the baptism of Sokun. Sokun is a graduate of the LCDI school and started studying the bible through the Sunday School programme that was run for LCDI students. This year he has been attending monthly outreach programmes and more recently he has come each week for individual lessons in preparation for baptism. Please think of us here in Phnom Penh tomorrow and rejoice with us as we welcome a new brother!

I have felt very blessed so far in my time in Cambodia. Our Khmer brothers and sisters are an example of joyful service and will always greet us with a smile and a hug. I love how welcome I always feel. Tonight at the dorms Bro David Todd continued the seminar series on “Human Problems, Jesus’ Solutions” and once again we were greeted with hugs all around. After the seminar we all asked each other “do you love me?” a fun game of trying to keep a straight face or its your turn in the middle.

Another thing I love here is the food!!! Every meal has been a delight (and an adventure) - I do not exaggerate! How you can fit so much flavour into food I do not know (possibly msg..) but I do enjoy it. There was an interesting moment last week upon the presentation of “Pig’s Ear Soup” for lunch. Some say its mushroom, others genuine pig’s ear. I say bite it and find out for yourself. Delicious!

With much love and greetings from the Phnom Penh ecclesia.
Esther

God Proves the Power of Prayer Again and Again

Over the course of my five-month long Cambodia trip I had the opportunity to teach class es at the Bethezer girl dorm regularly . For th ese class es I have a translator so I just get to teach the good news ( none of this dilly-dallying about English teaching ). Our topic on this particular night was prayer. Philippians 4:6 reminded us that God is longing to hear from us just as a father lo ves to hear from his child or how we are just hanging out to get a message from someone we love. We looked at H is promises to answer ALL our prayers while we abide in Jesus Christ (John 15:7) and at Psalm 34:4 where God confidently affirms that when you find your happiness with God, H e will certainly give you more of what makes you happy (Him!). And you can pray for that happiness because God will give you anything that brings you closer to Him so never be afraid to ask! That is nothing but i ncredibly good news ! We raced through many more quotes and I had expected to strug...

Maybe I'm just a girl

Well, dear Readers, Things have been busy here with preparation for our seminar this weekend. Catering, printing, emailing and phoning have been occupying our hours. James is sitting opposite me on the table working on his talks for Friday. We have had quite a number of bookings for our seminar and the numbers have only been limited by the size of our premises. God willing, all will attend and we’ll have a good two days of talks and chatting. We’re planning, God willing, a boat cruise as our social activity and that should be a blast since we can have a 2 hour cruise for 50 people for only $20. Have managed to hook up skype credit and tested a mobile call to Prydie. The 5 second lag meant it was like having two random monologues in the same room. The prices was fairly reasonable, but even as 3 cents a minute the cost climbs. James spends much time out on the balcony. He gets good wireless reception. It's quite a amusing to peek through the window and see James out on the balcony wa...
