Most mornings, David and I are up and out the door by 5:45am, to start the dorm service at 6:00am. We are currently hopping through the 66 books of the Bible, summarising a book each morning. The idea is to give the dormers a little bit of background that will let them place the events and stories that they read into a bit of context. We generally cover a bit about the main themes or people in each book as well as the time and place and circumstances in which it was written. We have just got onto the minor prophets... these are the hardest books for the Khmer to find so it will be some good practice!
Following that, I have a class from 6:30 – 7:30 with Sis Dany, studying from the Way of Life book. David has a class too at around that time with a small group of dormers, currently studying Old Testament stories that reveal principles we read of in the New Testament.
While we are at the dorms in the early hours, Loy, Gary and Vitou all have classes to teach here at the BEC. There can be a number of classes scattered through the day, but with exam season coming up attendance is intermittent: it can be a little hard to know if or when your scheduled class will eventuate! Gary is now leading an afternoon class with a couple of boys from the dorm reading the gospel of Luke.
In the evening David and I head back to the dorms for another 3 classes: I teach Theung while David takes a group of 6 – 10 dormers, both studying from Way of Life, but at different stages. Following this we then have another class with Sokhorn, preparing for Baptism, who, God Willing, will be baptised this weekend... more on that next week.
That’s the usual weekday programme, except for Thursday, when a few of us go out to LCDI to teach English.
On Saturdays, we have a special breakfast, which we take turns to prepare, and then a Bible class for the fieldworkers here. Then we have more classes, followed by a seminar at the dorms in the evening. Last week’s seminar was on Baptism, and we had 6 questions we wanted them to answer. Each group discussed one question, then presented their answer to the whole class. All seemed to go quite well and get people involved a little more. We then have tea with everyone after that.
On Sunday, we have more classes in the morning, and at the same time, Sunday School, led by sisters Theavy and Kimsrean. We have about 8 or 10 kids who are all keen to come. The Sunday School is all in Khmer and it looks like heaps of fun. In the afternoon we have the Memorial Meeting and then a question and answer session for the unbaptised while the Bible class is on for the ecclesia.
A short time ago, Vitou and Gary left for a weekend trip to Preah Vihear province in the far North of Cambodia, near the Thai border to meet up with some outreach contacts who would like to be baptised. They will return by Sunday night, God Willing.
We are all very happy to have Michael, Miriam, Tobi and Tabby back with us after their month in Australia. Welcome Home!
