So sorry it has been a while since our last update of everything happening in Cambodia! We have had a bit of a change to routines due to the elections and many students taking the opportunity to go home to the province. At BEC we took this opportunity to catch up on teaching programs and we are now officially using our "Instruction Toolkit". This is allowing us to keep track of the studies of each of our contacts and meet their needs regarding their learning about God's word.
We have found this is a great help in planning our lessons and making the most of each teaching moment! We have been so blessed to have so many people from different walks of life wanting to learn about God at BEC. One of our happy moments today was finding out that one of the young men who comes to study in the morning, wants to join the Bethezer dorm so that he has more opportunity to learn about God.
We are so excited with the prospect of the Bethezer girls' dormitory opening soon. God has certainly blessed us in making the adjoining house to the boys' dorm available for rent. Now it's up to the rest of us to do the easy part... and that is to make some small financial contribution to make sure the rent can be paid!!!!
The dorms provide us with so much opportunity to preach God's word to willing ears and at the same time help young people who are struggling with poverty. When we held our regular Saturday night mini seminar last week at the dorm we had 30 eager young people there who hung off every word about 2 Peter 3. We envisage this number will double when the girls' dorm opens!!!
We were also excited last Sunday when two of the teachers from LCDI came to BEC with the 25 students to learn about the Bible. Our small group who ride bicycles half an hour each way to BEC from LCDI continue to attend regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays...many more would come if we had enough bicylces for them. They are learning about Abraham and the promises that God made to him. Our Thursday morning trip to teach English at LCDI now includes Meng Him who is providing some helpful training for the teachers while Steve, Loy and I take the classes. On the way home in the tuk tuk he reflected on his new role as Dorm Manager at the boys' dorm..."my work makes me feel so close to God. Starting each day with the boys reading God's word is giving me such a close relationship to God."
Steve is really enjoying his Saturday morning group of young men who come to study at 8 o'clock. They are not boys from the dorm, but university students compeleting degrees in Law and IT. They often end up staying for a couple of hours. The young people here fill their lives with learning and rarely find time for what we would consider 'leisure tim
e'.
We attended our first Cambodian wedding on Saturday morning, having been invited by the groom who is one of our students. We were not sure if we were going to get there at first because the directions that Moses gave to Loy were not very explicit. After about 6 phone calls and about 45 minutes of driving around in the tuk tuk we finally arrived - just in time to enjoy the food!
For those who are familiar with the location of BEC in Phnom Penh we have an updated photo of Kirirom Theatre which is no longer a theatre but a hotel and nightclub... sad to say that the bright lights have encroached on street 141.
We are looking forward to Jeannie and Warren Barton's visit from Toowoomba to Cambodia on August 18th. We pray that their stay will provide further encouragement and support for the ecclesia in Phnom Penh.
