Picturesque
town of Sihanoukville, with its many lovely beaches and quiet atmosphere,
is my favorite place in Cambodia. So it was a pleasure to be able to
spend another few weeks here this year with Sis Chanty, Bro Savy, Sis Theung
and little Salee.
Unfortunately fieldworkers have been scarce in the last year or so, so things
have fallen into a bit of a state of neglect. BEC 2 has moved location
recently, so when I arrived there was quite a lot of work to be done to set the
new house up properly.
There were also no students to teach initially, but soon the word went out that
a fieldworker had arrived and within a day or so 11 old students and one new
one began classes again.
The students have been wonderfully keen and it has been a delight to teach
them. All are young and mostly still studying at school or university. As well
as bible lessons, we have had some outings to the beach to play football and
frisbee.
There
are also two sunday schools of smaller children here. Around 12 children attend
the BEC each Sunday morning. In the afternoon Savy and Chanty drive about an
hour from Sihanoukville to teach another 20 children at the home of Sis Min.
During my stay, Bro Steve and Sis Lynne
Armes and Bro Puthsa visited Sihanoukville for a few days, and Sis Verity
and Sis Deborah for a night. This has been a big morale booster for the 3
faithful brothers and sisters here who spend a great deal of their time in
'isolation'.
Two weeks after my arrival I was joined by veteran fieldworkers Bro Brian and
Sis Dot Manser and Sis Una Strempel. (Very sadly Bro Don is no longer able to
travel). They will spend the next couple of months here in Sihanoukville, which
will solidify the mission work here greatly. They are aged between 75 to 80
years of age, which is an amazing example of dedication for younger
fieldworkers.
So now we have new life breathed into BEC2, we desperately need to maintain
that momentum with a consistency of fieldworkers visiting here. The work is
infinitely beneficial to both the spiritual health of the local ecclesia, and
also the spiritual health of any fieldworkers.
Why not put a few weeks in this lovely part of Cambodia on your
"must visit" list this year....You will not be disappointed.
