New Start!

Something Luke and I were not anticipating before we came here was writing an entirely new course to teach!  At one of the fieldworker meetings it was suggested that a new approach could be taken when we advertised for a new course.  This time, our main focus is on English words which are taken from topics in the Bible but can also be used in everyday life.

We begin our lessons by teaching new words to the students, giving them the meanings and putting them into sentences or some other activity.  We finish the lesson with a passage from the Bible which includes most of the words they have just learned so they can put it into some sort of context.  We are teaching the same lesson each day but at four different times with an extra lesson on Saturday and Sunday where Luke crams a whole week’s worth of lessons into two sessions.

We began the course with an introduction session for all the new students on a Saturday afternoon before it officially started.  This was so we could introduce ourselves, explain what was happening at the BEC and how things worked with the dorms.  It seemed to be a success with about 15 coming along and some even turning up to Worship on Sunday morning.  It also meant that they had met us before their lesson so it wasn’t all too new.

So far so good!  We now have regular students coming to each of the classes, some earlier than anticipated with the 6am class being changed to beginning at 5.30am due to two of the students having to start work at 7am.  They arrive every morning, right on time and keen to learn so it makes the extra early hours in the morning worth getting up for – although sometimes I wonder how I manage to function and speak any English at all at such an early hour!

At the end of seven weeks we will assess how we are going and, God willing, will have more students to teach the bible-based courses to.  We have a regular number of 12 students coming to the new courses which is a promising beginning, quite a few of whom are looking forward to the next stage of their involvement with the BEC.

Well, dear Readers, Things have been busy here with preparation for our seminar this weekend. Catering, printing, emailing and phoning have been occupying our hours. James is sitting opposite me on the table working on his talks for Friday. We have had quite a number of bookings for our seminar and the numbers have only been limited by the size of our premises. God willing, all will attend and we’ll have a good two days of talks and chatting. We’re planning, God willing, a boat cruise as our social activity and that should be a blast since we can have a 2 hour cruise for 50 people for only $20. Have managed to hook up skype credit and tested a mobile call to Prydie. The 5 second lag meant it was like having two random monologues in the same room. God Proves the Power of Prayer Again and Again

Over the course of my five-month long Cambodia trip I had the opportunity to teach class es at the Bethezer girl dorm regularly . For th ese class es I have a translator so I just get to teach the good news ( none of this dilly-dallying about English teaching ). Our topic on this particular night was prayer. Philippians 4:6 reminded us that God is longing to hear from us just as a father lo ves to hear from his child or how we are just hanging out to get a message from someone we love. We looked at H is promises to answer ALL our prayers while we abide in Jesus Christ (John 15:7) and at Psalm 34:4 where God confidently affirms that when you find your happiness with God, H e will certainly give you more of what makes you happy (Him!). And you can pray for that happiness because God will give you anything that brings you closer to Him so never be afraid to ask! That is nothing but i ncredibly good news !
