What a contrast of technology versus the most basic of utensils… Loy and I are sitting in the glow of candle-light typing on the computers! Yes, yet another blackout, but this time at 7.30 pm. Our power failures are usually in the daytime when demand is at a premium, but this evening we are left in the dark. We seem to experience the lack of power less frequently - but for longer periods of time. Yesterday we were without power for five hours from 12 midday until the evening.
Loy’s full-time study at university is drawing to a close and consequently she has started joining us for our early morning studies at the dorm…the “dorm service”. This morning we began to look at Genesis. We read Genesis chapter 4 and talked about the different offerings of Cain and Abel. We discussed how God wants us to not only understand His requirements, but to also have the right attitude. This followed on beautifully from our study of 1 Corinthians 13 last week… “I gain nothing if I do not have love”. Poor Cain thought his punishment was more than he could bear, how blessed we are to find rest in Jesus, knowing that his yoke is easy and his burden is light!
Chea is so excited to be studying the nature of man and understanding where sin came from. He is loving the study of Genesis 3 and 4 ... the pieces of the puzzle are slowly coming together for him.
We had an interesting experience last week. On our walk to Asian Spice restaurant one evening for dinner we bumped into two young Swedish girls (backpackers) who were lost. We tried to assist them to find their accommodation (Loy translating with a tuk tuk driver) and finally offered for them to join us for dinner. It was dark and we were concerned for their safety (they were only 19) so during dinner we told them they could stay with us for the night. As we chatted they were intrigued by our work here and when we invited them to join us at 6 am for our Bible study at the dorm, they accepted with seeming excitement. They were amazed at the intensity of thought and spiritual contemplation shown by the boys as we read 1 Corinthians 13 in both Cambodian and English Bibles. They ended up staying with us for 4 days and joined us on Saturday night for session 3 of our Learn to Read the Bible Effectively Course. They were not Christians, but loved what we are doing here at BEC …teaching people to follow God in spirit and in truth. We shared much discussion over those four days about our beliefs and God … we pray that some seeds have been sown in fertile ground and that God will bless them with ears that will want to hear more.
Our very exciting news here is that Nirann has requested baptism and so we will be blessed with another brother in Christ on June 15th. He has developed a wonderful understanding of scripture and a truly deep love for God and His son. We ask that your prayers will be with Nirann as he prepares for this wonderful time, when we will welcome another child of God through faith in Jesus Christ!
